Nestling in the heart of the
great Himalaya, and called
Druk Yul (Land of the
Thunder Dragon) by its
people, the Buddhist Kingdom
of Bhutan is one of the
world's most beautiful
tourist destinations. Often
referred to as the Last
Shangri- La, this Himalayan
Kingdom is home to a
remarkable variety of
climate and ecosystem. With
72 percent of the country
under forest cover, the
thunder dragon is a
trekker's paradise and an
environmentalist's dream.
Occupying an area of 47,000
sq km (18,147 sq miles) the
country is sparsely
populated by six hundred
thousand people of Tibetan,
Indo-Mongoloid, Aboriginal
and Nepalese origins and is
also the last surviving
Mahayana Buddhist state.
Opened for tourism only in
1974, Bhutan has three
regions that are open to the
visitors (western, central
and Eastern) which are
distinctly different from
each other due to the
prominent north south
mountain ranges that
separate each area resulting
in different topographical
features. Many parts of the
country have been declared
wildlife reserves, and are
the natural habitats of rare
species of both flora and
fauna. Nowhere in the
Himalayas is the natural
heritage more rich and
varied than in Bhutan which
still retains all the charm
of the old world, and
travelers experience the
full glory of this ancient
land as embodied in the
monastic fortresses, ancient
temples, monasteries and
stupas which dot the
countryside.
Centuries of isolationism, a
small population, and
topographical extremes have
led to Bhutan maintaining
one of the most intact
ecosystems in the world. The
country ranks amongst the
top ten countries in the
world in terms of species
density (species richness
per unit area). Over
fifty-five hundred varieties
of plant life exist,
including around
three-hundred medicinal
ones. More than 770 species
of avifauna and more than
165 species of mammals are
known to exist, including
many rare and endangered
species like the red panda,
snow leopard, and golden
langur
